Award-Winning Integrator Debuts Italian Eelectron OL-U Range at J.R.R. Tolkien’s Oxford Home
12th May 2026
COOKHAM DEAN, UK – AVINU, the award-winning specialist consultancy for intelligent building systems, today announces the successful delivery of a landmark smart home integration at Northmoor Road, Oxford. In a significant move for the UK’s luxury residential market, AVINU has become the first integrator to introduce the prestigious Italian Eelectron OL-U range of control interfaces to the UK, selected specifically for the former residence of J.R.R. Tolkien.
Northmoor Road is a property of unparalleled cultural significance. It is here, between 1930 and 1947, that Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and the majority of The Lord of the Rings. Modernising a Grade II-listed home of this stature required a technological solution that offered high-fidelity control without compromising the architectural integrity of a space where the author’s original doors and window catches remain intact.
To meet this challenge, AVINU implemented a comprehensive KNX-based ecosystem managing lighting, precision climate control, and automated window systems together with multi-room audio and enterprise-grade internet. The centrepiece of the user interface is the Eelectron OL-U series. Bridging the gap between heritage and innovation, the OL-U Metal edition range in bronze was chosen for its combination of refined aesthetics, tactile interaction and advanced KNX functionality.
In a bespoke tribute to the home’s history, AVINU facilitated custom laser-engraved iconography for the switches, allowing the residents to navigate their home using Lord of the Rings icons. This personalisation ensures the technology feels like a natural extension of the home’s narrative rather than a modern intrusion.
“The Northmoor Road project is a testament to our ‘Complete Clarity’ philosophy,” says Darryl Roberts, Managing Director of AVINU. “Working on a heritage site of this magnitude requires more than just installation; it requires a delicate touch and an understanding of how residents interact with their environment. By debuting the Eelectron OL-U range here, we’ve provided a tactile, design-led interface that is as durable as it is beautiful, ensuring the home remains future-proof while honouring its literary past.”
The homeowners expressed their satisfaction with the transformation:
“We had a fantastic experience working with AVINU during our house renovation. They covered the installation/automation of lighting, speakers, internet, heating/cooling and window treatments. From the start, the team was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and easy to work with. Their recommendations were thoughtful and tailored to our house (which is listed, so needed a delicate touch) and the way we live. The quality of the work has been excellent throughout, and the team super friendly.”
This project follows AVINU’s recent success at the Smart Building Awards 2025 where they were named winners of the “Best Whole Home Integration Project” for another design-led residential home project in London, consolidating their status as a leading authority in the UK smart home sector.
